What Schengen Embassies Actually Require

The Vietnamese birth certificate Schengen visa requirement is not just translation. Every Schengen embassy requires two distinct steps from a foreign-language civil document before it can process your application.

The first step authenticates the original. It proves the document was genuinely issued by a recognized Vietnamese authority and has not been altered. Before 11 September 2026, this required consular legalization. After that date, a single MOFA apostille replaces the entire chain.

The second step translates the content. Even after an apostille, the embassy cannot read Vietnamese. A certified translation into the embassy's required language, typically French, German, Dutch, or Spanish, makes the document usable for the visa officer.

Both steps are compulsory. A certified translation alone gives the embassy no way to verify the source document. Authentication alone leaves the content unreadable.

What Changed on 11 September 2026

Vietnam's accession to the Hague Apostille Convention entered into force on 11 September 2026. All 27 Schengen member states also belong to the Hague Convention, so the Vietnamese apostille is valid across the entire Schengen zone.

Before that date, the three-step chain worked like this: a Vietnamese notary office first certified the document, then MOFA authenticated it, and finally the destination country's consular office in Vietnam applied its own stamp. Each step added waiting time and a separate fee.

From 11 September 2026, Vietnam's Department of Consular Affairs issues a single apostille directly on the original Vietnamese document. The process is faster, cheaper, and involves one government office instead of three. Check the current appointment availability at MOFA's consular department when you apply.

One thing does not change: an apostille authenticates the issuing official's seal and signature on the original. It does not translate the content. Your certified Vietnamese birth certificate translation is still required alongside the apostille.

Do I Need an Apostille for a Short-Stay Schengen Visa?

A birth certificate is not always on the Schengen visa checklist. Short-stay tourist or business visas typically do not require one. The document becomes necessary for family reunion applications, spouse or partner visa categories, long-stay student or work visa cases, and applications where the embassy needs to verify your civil status or family relationship.

If the checklist for your visa category and destination country does not mention a birth certificate, you do not need to submit one. If it does, the requirements above apply: authentication of the original plus a certified translation.

Does Germany Require a Different Type of Translation?

Germany's consular checklist asks for a beglaubigte Ubersetzung (certified translation). This means a translation accompanied by a written declaration from the translator confirming accuracy and completeness. It does not mean a translation stamped by a Vietnamese notary office. German consulates in Vietnam accept translations with a signed translator's declaration.

France requires a traduction certifiee. French embassies accept translations with a translator's written declaration of accuracy. The French requirement does not include a Vietnamese notary seal.

If a checklist specifies a sworn translation (traduction assermentee or vereidigte Ubersetzung), it refers to a translator recognized by the courts of that country, which is a different accreditation.
