Registering a Foreigner-Vietnamese Marriage in Da Nang (2026)
💡 A foreigner marrying a Vietnamese partner in Da Nang registers at the ward (phường) People's Committee where the Vietnamese partner holds permanent or temporary residence. Since July 2025 under Decree 120/2025, this process runs at ward level: district offices no longer exist. Bring your apostilled or legalised single-status certificate with a certified Vietnamese translation, plus a mental-health certificate from a Vietnamese hospital. Standard processing: 5 working days.
Key takeaways
- Register at the ward People's Committee where your Vietnamese partner is permanently or temporarily registered. Da Nang abolished its district tier in mid-2025, so older guides pointing to a "district" office are out of date.
- Your home-country single-status certificate must be apostilled or consular-legalised and accompanied by a certified Vietnamese translation. The certificate must be less than 6 months old when you submit the dossier.
- Since 11 September 2026, Vietnam joined the Hague Apostille Convention. If your home country is also a member, an apostille replaces the longer consular-legalisation chain.
- A mental-health certificate from a Vietnamese medical facility is required. This surprises most foreigners: budget at least a half-day for the check.
- Standard processing is 5 working days. Allow several weeks overall to gather and authenticate documents from home before that clock even starts.
Which office handles a foreigner-Vietnamese marriage in Da Nang?
Since 1 July 2025, under Decree 120/2025/ND-CP, civil registration with foreign elements - including marriage - moves to the ward or commune (phường/xã) People's Committee where the Vietnamese partner holds permanent or temporary residence. Da Nang no longer has a district tier: all "district People's Committee" references in older guides are outdated.
The Justice and Civil Status desk (bộ phận tư pháp - hộ tịch) at the relevant ward office handles the paperwork. Not sure which ward applies? The Da Nang Visitor Center at 108 Bạch Đằng (tel 0236 3 550 111) can route you to the right office. The Da Nang City Department of Justice oversees city-wide civil-status registration and can answer general procedural questions.
What documents does the foreign partner need?
Gather every item below before visiting the ward office. A missing document means returning another day.
- Passport - original plus one photocopy
- Single-status certificate from your home country, less than 6 months old, authenticated (apostille or consular legalisation - see below) and with a certified Vietnamese translation attached
- Mental-health certificate confirming no disorder affecting civil capacity, issued by a Vietnamese medical facility within the last 6 months
- If previously married: authenticated and translated divorce decree, or death certificate of former spouse
- Marriage registration declaration form - both partners sign at the ward office; the form is supplied there
The Vietnamese partner brings their national identity card or passport and their household-registration document (sổ hộ khẩu) or proof of current temporary residence.
Apostille or consular legalisation: which applies to you?
It depends on your nationality. Since 11 September 2026, Vietnam joined the Hague Apostille Convention. If your home country is also a member, your single-status certificate needs only a single apostille stamp from the designated authority in your country. This replaces the multi-step consular-legalisation chain and is typically faster and cheaper.
If your home country is not in the Convention, the older route applies: authentication by your home-country authorities, then legalisation at a Vietnamese embassy or consulate. Check with your embassy in Vietnam before preparing the document, as accepted formats vary.
After authentication, the document must be translated into Vietnamese by a certified translator. The Da Nang Help centre can point you to trusted certified translation services in Da Nang.
Where to get the mental-health certificate in Da Nang
Vietnamese law requires a certificate confirming that both parties have no mental disorder affecting their capacity to consent and act. For foreigners, a Vietnamese hospital or clinic issues this on request. Ask for a "giấy xác nhận sức khỏe tâm thần" (mental-health certificate for civil-registration purposes).
Two Da Nang clinics with English-speaking staff:
- Vinmec Da Nang International Hospital, 30 Tháng 4 St, main line 0236 3711 111; international patients +84 378 809 779. Open 24h.
- Family Medical Practice Da Nang, 96-98 Nguyễn Văn Linh, tel +84 236 3582 699; 24/7 emergency +84 913 917 303.
Budget roughly 500,000-1,000,000 VND for the check - confirm the current fee with the clinic before going. The certificate is valid for 6 months from the date of issue.
How long does the full process take?
The ward office processes a complete dossier in 5 working days. If the office needs to verify documents with a foreign authority, it may extend to up to 10 working days. That clock starts only once your file is complete and accepted.
In practice, the bottleneck is gathering documents abroad. Getting a single-status certificate from your home country, having it apostilled, and obtaining a certified Vietnamese translation can take anywhere from one to several weeks. If you need to extend your legal stay in Vietnam while waiting, see the visa and stay guide.
What can go wrong?
- Stale documents: the single-status certificate and the mental-health certificate are each valid for 6 months only. If either expires before submission, you obtain them again.
- Name mismatches: your name on the passport must match your name on the single-status certificate exactly, including romanisation of any non-Latin name. Discrepancies need a notarised explanation.
- Language barrier: ward office staff typically work in Vietnamese only. Bring a Vietnamese-speaking companion, or arrange interpretation through the Da Nang Help line.
- Unauthenticated foreign documents: a notarised photocopy is not the same as an apostilled certificate. Confirm exactly which form of authentication your ward office will accept before you travel.
FAQ
Can we hold a ceremony before the civil registration?
In Vietnam, the civil registration is the legal marriage. A ceremony without registration has no legal standing. Complete the registration first, then celebrate however you wish.
Does a marriage registered in Da Nang have legal standing at home?
Usually yes, but you must follow your home country's rules for recognising an overseas marriage. Typically this means getting a certified copy of the Vietnamese marriage certificate, having it apostilled (for Hague member states from 11 Sep 2026), and registering it with your home civil authority. Requirements vary: check with your embassy or a family-law solicitor at home before you start.
How does marriage to a Vietnamese citizen affect my visa or residence?
Marriage does not automatically change your visa status, but it gives you a basis to apply for a longer-term temporary residence card (thẻ tạm trú). For current rules on extending your legal stay after marriage, see the visa and stay guide.
Do both partners need to appear in person?
Yes. Both parties must personally sign the marriage registration declaration at the ward office when the dossier is submitted. Neither can send a representative for that step.
What if I cannot get a single-status certificate from my home country?
Contact your embassy or consulate in Vietnam first: they may issue a certificate of no impediment or an equivalent document. If your country genuinely cannot issue such a certificate, ask the ward office whether a sworn declaration will be accepted - but confirm this before assuming it will work.
