Certified Translation of Marriage Certificate (Vietnamese)
A Vietnamese marriage certificate proves a legally registered marriage and is central to spousal and family-based immigration. I translate it into English and sign a certificate of accuracy confirming the translation is complete and correct. I certify the translation as the translator; I do not notarize it, and USCIS does not require notarization.
Couples filing a spousal or fiancee petition, derivative beneficiaries added to a principal applicant's case, and people registering a foreign marriage all need the marriage certificate in English. A certified translation lets the receiving authority read and rely on the Vietnamese record.
What it is
A Vietnamese marriage certificate (giay chung nhan ket hon) is the civil-status document confirming a marriage registered at the commune-level People's Committee, or at the Department of Justice when a foreign national is involved. It records both spouses, the date the marriage was registered and the registering office. Like other civil records, it appears in older handwritten form and in newer machine-printed form, and a re-issued extract may also be supplied. Each spouse receives an identical original copy of the certificate.
When you need a certified translation
A certified English translation is needed whenever an authority asks for proof of marriage: USCIS spousal petitions (I-130) and adjustment of status (I-485), NVC and embassy consular processing, derivative-beneficiary filings, and civil or church registration abroad. USCIS accepts the translator's certificate of accuracy and does not require notarization. Some courts or registries abroad may ask for additional certification, which I can accommodate on request.
Key fields, and how each is handled
| Field | How it is handled |
|---|---|
| Husband's full name and date of birth | The name is transcribed with diacritics and spelled to match his passport and other documents so the petition is internally consistent. |
| Wife's full name and date of birth | The wife's name, including her maiden name, is spelled identically to her own birth certificate and passport. |
| Date of marriage registration | The registration date is rendered unambiguously so it cannot be mistaken for any other date on the document. |
| Registering office | The full administrative chain of the registering People's Committee or Department of Justice is given so the authority can identify the issuing body. |
| Certificate / registration number | The number tying the marriage to the civil-status register is reproduced exactly for verification. |
| Prior marital status (where shown) | If a remarriage notes the prior status, I translate that wording faithfully because it can be relevant to eligibility. |
Common pitfalls on this document
Both names must match the passports
Each spouse's name has to match their passport and other filed documents. I align the spellings across the whole file so a name mismatch does not trigger a query.
Remarriage and prior status
A certificate for a second marriage may reference prior marital status. I render that wording precisely rather than paraphrasing it, since it can affect the case.
Date format clarity
Vietnamese dates can be misread under day-month-year vs month-day-year conventions. I write dates so the marriage date is unmistakable.
🏛 Who accepts it
A certified English translation of a Vietnamese marriage certificate is accepted by USCIS, the National Visa Center (NVC), US embassies and consulates, and by foreign civil registries, courts and immigration departments. These bodies look for the translator's signed certificate of accuracy; for USCIS, notarization is not required.

✉ Yêu cầu báo giáFAQ
Is a notarized translation required for a spousal visa?
No. USCIS requires a certified translation with a signed certificate of accuracy. Notarization is not part of the requirement, though a specific foreign registry may ask for more.
My spouse and I have different surname conventions. How is that handled?
I keep each spouse's name spelled exactly as on their passport and other documents, so the marriage certificate lines up with the rest of the petition.
This is a remarriage. Does the prior status get translated?
Yes. If the certificate references prior marital status, I translate that wording faithfully because it may be relevant to the authority's review.
We each have an original copy. Which one should I translate?
Either original works, since they are identical. I label the document so the authority knows it is a marriage certificate original or extract as submitted.
