From Zero to Top-Rated Plus: My 6-Year Journey on Upwork

In 2018, I created an Upwork profile with zero reviews, zero reputation, and honestly, zero idea what I was doing. I charged $0.03/word — way below market — just to get anyone to hire me. My first client paid $4.20 for a 140-word product description.

The First 10 Reviews

Getting from 0 to 10 reviews is the hardest part of Upwork. Nobody wants to be your first client. My strategy was simple and slightly painful: I accepted jobs I was overqualified for, charged rates I was not proud of, and delivered extraordinary work. Every single job. Every time.

After review #10, something shifted. I raised my rate to $0.06/word. No one complained.

The Niche That Changed Everything

I got my first medical translation request in late 2019 — a US healthcare agency needing patient summaries translated into Vietnamese. I quoted $0.07/word. They accepted immediately.

That moment taught me: the right clients don't negotiate on price when they see value.

I specialised hard. Medical, legal, financial — the "scary" domains that junior translators avoided. I invested 200+ hours into terminology research across those fields. Within 12 months, I had 40 reviews averaging 4.98 stars.

Top Rated: The Threshold

Upwork's Top Rated status requires 90%+ JSS (Job Success Score), $1,000+ earned, and an active account. I hit it at 52 reviews. The badge did something unexpected: it made clients trust me before reading my profile.

Top Rated Plus: The Real Game

Top Rated Plus is invitation-only. Upwork sends it when you've earned $10,000+ in the past 12 months, maintained a 90%+ JSS, and have a strong review history. I received the invite in 2023 after a particularly strong year.

With 81 reviews and a 4.99 average today, here's what I've learned:

Six Years, One Lesson

Upwork success is not about gaming the algorithm. It's about being genuinely good at your work and making clients feel like they made the right choice. The platform just measures that.

If you're starting out: pick one niche, go deep, be patient, and deliver extraordinary work on every single job. The reviews will follow.
